Learn New Skills Or Outsource?

There are plenty of marketers out there saying that you should outsource as much as you can rather than learning to do it yourself.

I tend to agree – to a point. Trying to do everything yourself is going to end up in a disaster one way or another. If you’re not a creative type then you’re going to have an ugly website. If HTML, CSS and site layout are things that you are only just learning then there’s a good chance your site will be a bit of a mess (though those of us using WordPress don’t have to worry too much about that as WP takes care of the layout).

I think you just have to be sensible. If you owned a retail store you would most likely know most of the basics – how and where to order stock, how to balance the books, how to track and maintain stock levels etc. If you plan on running your online business then you should know the basics of that business. You shouldn’t have to rely totally on outsourcing. Here’s my list of the minimum skills I think are necessary for an online business owner:

Update your site content – if you have to rely on a contractor to fix every spelling mistake, update your weekly news or make other minor content changes then it could get quite expensive. There are times when you need to be able to make changes straight away without waiting for a friendly freelancer to get the job done. If you are using Worpdress then updating your site content is as easy as using a simple word processor. If not, then you may need to learn some basic HTML.

Add/Remove affiliate links – someone might be running a weekend special or other short term promotion – you should be able to react straight away and make the necessary changes.

Update your own products – if you are selling products online then you should be able to update or change those products.

Know what’s going on – this is probably the most important. Giving control of your site to someone else who has no real interest in your site isn’t necessarily the smartest thing to do. If you are outsourcing then you need to be able to check and approve all work that is done by others on your website.

Outsourcing is a very logical step once your site is humming along and making some money. Farming out some of the day to day tasks will give you more time to concentrate on your site content, your products or services and your customers. Don’t outsource too early though. Spend enough time on your site to know the ‘ins and outs’ of it before you place those day to day tasks in someone elses hands. And always check on the work that is being done by contractors and/or freelancers.

Work From Home 3: Ask Yourself How

Now that you know why you want to create an online business and you know what you need to do – the next question is how! How are you going to make the transition from home business wannabe to home business hero (or heroine)!

This is the point that I started at in my last series on building an online business. It all starts with a plan. One of the reasons you need a plan is so that you can check the numbers – after all, business is a numbers game – and the other reason is so that you can celebrate your successes.

Work From Home 2: Ask Yourself What

So, hopefully I have you starting to think about all the wonderful changes that can happen in your life if you take a little time to ask yourself why you want change and how it is going to improve your lifestyle, relationships and income.

The next thing to do is think about what. What do you have to do? What do you have to change? What sacrifices do you have to make in order to achieve that improved lifestyle or a better relationship with your partner, family or friends? And of course, the big question when it comes to working from home – what is it going to take in order to achieve a nice income from home?

Work From Home 1: Ask Yourself Why

A while back I started writing a multi-part series about online business, but in retrospect I missed a whole lot of preparation steps. Rather than starting with the individual – you – I started with the business. So I’ve decided to create a new series and this time we’re going to begin from the beginning.

Ask Yourself Why

The very first thing you need to do before you start an online business is to ask yourself why. Why do you want to create a business from home?

The Trouble With Get Rich Quick

The main trouble with ‘get rich quick’ is that it does not exist. Those crazy statements like ‘He turned 5 cents into $173,165 inside one month’ are aimed at lazy people and designed to get the SELLER rich rather than the buyer.

Here’s my best advice. Stop trying to take the easy way and the short cuts. Stop trying to automate things that were never supposed to be automated. Stop auto-posting  spun junk on article directories and social network sites. Stop breaking the rules. Stop being so lazy.

It’s true that anyone can make a fortune online. Unfortunately, there are far too many people out there trying to make a fortune by giving you flawed information that is supposed to tell you how to make a fortune.

Seriously folks, if you could make $150,000 or even $10,000 easily in a month what would you do? Would you keep making that money and building your business or would you create some cheap e-book about it? Have you ever wondered why all those affiliates are selling ‘get rich quick’ programs instead of using them to get rich quick? If you guessed that it’s because most of those programs don’t work then you are correct.

It’s an unfortunate thing that a promise of extraordinary riches for an extraordinarily small amount of effort presses our greed button. Even if you’ve been burned 40 or 50 times you will probably purchase… just in case this one really works!

So what’s the answer?

The fact is that there isn’t a single answer to the ‘how do I get rich online’ question. One thing is for sure though – you need to be able to create a website that is rich with original, valuable content and you need to be able to stay focused on it for long enough that it gathers a fan base and your visitors can see that you do indeed know what you are talking about. You don’t have to be an expert, but it is advisable to know more about your topic than the ‘average joe’.

If you were expecting to see a pitch for some online course that will show you everything you need to know about getting rich online then I’m sorry to say that I’ll have to disappoint you. This post isn’t about pitching the impossible dream – it’s about reality, and the sooner you get into reality mode, the sooner you will be ready to allow yourself to build something truly useful and profitable online.

I don’t dispute that it’s possible to have literally hundreds of sites and blogs that make money online, but the crucial step that most people seem to miss is the process of creating one blog or site that makes money and then replicating that process. Instead, most people simply put up new sites every week without any sort of income building plan and the first ten fail, then the next ten fail and so on and so on.

If you are serious about earning your income online then take the time to create just one income generating site first – and then once you know the process that you went through to create that site and generate income from it – then you should start making more sites or, if you aren’t into building niche sites,  simply continue building that first site into something really special.
