Put Your Heart And Soul Into It
Writing a blog that people want to read isn’t easy. You need to have some geniunely interesting or informative topics to write about. You also need to have a personal interest in those topics and a genuine desire to share information. What I’m saying is that you need to put your heart and soul into it.
Every day I see blogs that are smothered in Adsense ads, product pitches and auto-generated content. I’m sure those blogs get some traffic but they are really nothing more than electronic billboards on some sleazy side street.
That’s definitely not the sort of content I want to read. I like to get a ‘feel’ for the person writing the blog posts. It’s nice to see a little humour here and there and perhaps a little controversy once in a while. Rumours and gossip can be fun as long as they aren’t malicious or vindictive.
In most cases, people will arrive on your blog as the result of a search. When they get there they will decide pretty quickly whether they want to stay or not. Obviously if your blog is just a thinly veiled sales pitch, most of the visitors will take a quick look and leave. On the other hand, if you can engage your readers with some handy tips, creative commentary or relevant humour, then there’s a good chance they will bookmark your site or subscribe to your RSS feed.
It’s always worthwhile to reflect on your own experiences. If you think about the blogs that you visit regularly or subscribe to and then think about why you visit them, then you are going to start to get an idea of what it is that attracts regular visitors. It always comes back to oe of two things – information or entertainment. If you can provide the information that your blog visitors want and/or entertain them then you are well on your way to becoming the next blogging rock star!

Nice post and I love what you said about blogs:

This is so true, you totally nailed it. The real question is why would you use an auto blog when you can write original content? You may get some adsense money or something I guess but those people won’t be back. Original content is always the best.
