Work From Home 2: Ask Yourself What
So, hopefully I have you starting to think about all the wonderful changes that can happen in your life if you take a little time to ask yourself why you want change and how it is going to improve your lifestyle, relationships and income.
The next thing to do is think about what. What do you have to do? What do you have to change? What sacrifices do you have to make in order to achieve that improved lifestyle or a better relationship with your partner, family or friends? And of course, the big question when it comes to working from home – what is it going to take in order to achieve a nice income from home?
I guess the first thing you need to do is to forget about all those pages and emails that talk about extraordinary income with little or no work – if you really want to achieve some goals and dreams then you are going to have to roll your sleeves up and do some work. Why would you do that? Jim Rohn often used to talk about the promise and the price. He said that the price was never too much to pay as long as the promise was big enough or good enough. That’s a really important point and it relates to the ‘why’. The whole reason for asking yourself why is so that you create a promise that is worthy of your commitment, time and effort.
So… back to that ‘what’ question. You’ve probably heard of many of the reasons why working from home is so attractive. You can set your own work hours, take a nap in the middle of the day and have no boss to answer to. You really have to be careful though as it is easy to slip back into watching Oprah or Dr.Phil instead of building your business.
That’s the first ‘what’ – discipline.
It’s important to discipline yourself to do a minimum number of hours work each day. That’s going to vary depending on whether you already have a full time job, kids to look after or other commitments. But keep in mind that there’s a learning curve and the best way to learn is to do. The more you repeat each task, the faster you will learn it well. I remember Tommy Emmanuel (brilliant guitarist – check him out on Youtube) saying to a guitar workshop – “if you want to learn a new tune – play it over and over and over”. It’s true – repetition is one of your most valuable learning tools.
The second ‘what’ is sacrifice. You may need to sacrifice some TV viewing time. I rarely watch television these days – other than perhaps the occasional documentary on Discovery Channel. I don’t feel too bad about that because I’m usually learning something new at the same time. Some really worthwhile sacrifices include the television news, radio news and even the local newspaper. Most of what you see, hear and read is bad news – because that’s what attracts the biggest audience. And most of that bad news is spun or sensationalised… and it doesn’t really affect you. Being successful is all about you – it’s not about a flood, plane crash or economic disaster in some far off country. That may sound a little cold, but if I really want to help people then the best course of action is to improve my own circumstances first so that I then have the time and money to help others.
The third ‘what’ is ‘why’. Yep, you need to remind yourself of the why from time to time. The ‘why’ is the promise, the goal… it’s the reason for doing the ‘what’. If you lose site of all the reasons you are putting serious time and effort into building something special and significant then you could lapse into the same old bad habits that prevent the vast majority of the population from achieving financial independence and a better life.
In the next post in this series we will talk about ‘how’.
